A Garden in a Glass

Sat 8th June, 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm

Interactive workshop for everyone aged 8 and up
The Garden in a Glass workshop will see you dive into a sensory world of herbal teas, garden lemonades and shrubs & syrups - all procured from the gardens and nature around us. A variety of fruits, wild flowers and garden herbs can contribute to refreshing lemonades, flavoured waters, sophisticated teas and other delicious drinks based on homemade syrups.
Each participant will get to know different fruits and herbs using all their senses as well as learning how they are preserved and the different ways we can extract their flavours. We'll make our own ice tea drinks and experiment on how to add delicious flowery or fruity flavours to water using everything from syrups to oxymels. The garden is also an enchanting place to be thanks to the visually appealing herb and flower beds.

The Hidden Kingdom - Visit The FEZ Bees

Sn 9th June, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm

Together with the Köpenick Beekeeping Club (Köpenicker Imkerverein) we invite you to take a fascinating glance into the life of the Wuhlheide's honey bees. Thanks to the viewing windows, you can see into the various bee houses and observe just how hard the colonies work. Can you spot the queen among the diligent drones? We'll also be harvesting honey and procuring beeswax. If you feel like lending a hand, then we'll be glad of the help and, of course, you can try the honey right away. You may also prefer to stand back and wait until the honey is ready for tasting and, if you enjoy the taste, perhaps buying a jar or two from the beekeepers. We're looking forward to showing you how important bees are to this city and the environment in general.

From Grain to Bread, From Fish to Tomato

Sun 9th June, 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm
Interactive workshop for everyone aged 6 and up
Bread is one of the world's staple foods. It's healthy and it contains many essential nutrients and fibres. So let's look at different types of grain. How many types do you know? What structure does grain have? How is it processed? In this workshop, each participant will be able to follow the whole journey from cultivation of ingredients via the kneading of the dough through to the baking of the finished loaf. That's because each participant will be making their own bread - with herbs direct from our garden if they wish.
Big juicy tomatoes and large fish? Where can you find them in the FEZ? In fact, you can find them all in one place because, soon, you'll be discovering the secrets of the 'tomato fish'. While the bread is baking in the oven, you'll be taken into the mini rainforest and learn about our aquaponics system, how we can improve sustainable diets in the future, how the water is cleaned in the system and where the energy comes from. We're also very keen to show off our new solar energy system. And, last but not least, how DO those tomatoes taste? You're welcome to try them!
